Max Renews Comedy Series ‘Hacks’ For A Fourth Season

As reported by Deadline, Max has officially renewed the critically acclaimed comedy series Hacks for a fourth season. The announcement came just hours after the season three finale, titled “Bulletproof,” was released on the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service.

Hacks, which stars Jean Smart (Babylon, Watchmen, Fargo) and Hannah Einbinder (How To Be Broke, North Hollywood, Julia), has been a hit since its inception. The third season, created by Lucia Aniello (Rough Night, Broad City, The Babysitters Club), Paul W. Downs (Rough Night, Broad City, American Dad), and Jen Statsky (The Good Place, Parks And Recreation, Forever), premiered on May 2, 2024.

Season three has been described as a pivotal moment for Deborah Vance’s character. Aniello shared with Deadline that they’ve “given Deborah her white whale.” Statsky added, “It’s giving her what she wanted for so long, but at what cost? What we’re setting up is that Deborah is now on the biggest stage of her career.”

According to Deadline, the show’s creators have a clear vision, with a planned five-season arc for Hacks. This renewal keeps the series on track to meet that goal, with the creators already knowing how the story will conclude. The cast includes Carl Clemons-Hopkins (Candyman, Range Runners, Canal Street) as Vance’s COO Marcus, Downs as agent Jimmy LuSaque Jr. and Megan Stalter (Cora Bora, Star Crossed, My Ex Friends Wedding) as assistant Kayla Schaefer. Recurring actors Kaitlin Olson (The Mick, New Girl, Finding Dory), Jane Adams (Hung, She Dies Tomorrow, Dog), and Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore, The Iron Giant, Flubber) add depth to the ensemble.

Hacks has garnered critical acclaim, with the first two seasons earning nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series at the Emmys. Jean Smart won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series both years. Additionally, Aniello, Downs, and Statsky won for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series in 2021, with Aniello also winning for Outstanding Directing, as mentioned by Deadline

Reported by Deadline, Sarah Aubrey, Head of Max Original Programming, praised the show: “Hacks is a masterfully crafted comedy delivering laughs and sharp insights about the vulnerability and joy of sharing a dream. The creative team behind this singular show is not only brilliant but also a joy to work with. We couldn’t be happier to give viewers another season with Deborah, Ava, and the rest of the Hacks family.”

Erin Underhill, President of Universal Television, added: “Hats off to Jen, Lucia, and Paul for crafting a world as compelling and poignant as it is clever and funny. We applaud our outstanding cast, who made it easy to fall in love with these flawed, hilarious, and deeply human characters, and we thank everyone at Max for a terrific partnership over the first three seasons and counting. We can’t wait to deliver more Hacks to fans around the world.” With its renewal, Hacks promises to continue its successful run, delivering more of the sharp wit and emotional depth that fans have come to love.
