Deadline has reported that comedy series Rap Sh!t has been canceled after two seasons. The show was created by actress and writer Issa Rae (Insecure, Rap Sh!t, Barbie). Max decided shortly after the show’s season finale aired in November.
The comedy series tells the story of two friends, Shawna, played by Aida Osman (Rap Sh!t, Group Therapy, The Young Wife), and Mia, played by KaMillion. The pair grew up in Miami and went to high school together. After being estranged, they came together to form a rap group. As their joint career grew, the two were challenged by pressures to conform with the music industry through the series. Other members of the cast included Jonica Booth(Mrs. Davis, Rap Sh! T, Discovering Brooklynn) as Chastity, RJ Cyler (The Harder They Fall, Power Rangers, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Lamont, and Daniel Augustin (The Turnaround, Á La Carte, Wu-Tang: An American Saga) as Maurice.
The co-executive producers of the series were Yung Miami (You People, Ice Cold, Yung Miami: Rap Freaks) and JT (June Feat JT The 4th: Lost in Yo Ways, JT: Ex For A Reason, Rap Sh!t) of City Girls.
The second season’s release of Rap Sh! had been postponed by Max. Initially, the streamer intended to air the show on August 10th, but due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, they felt that a November release would be better since actors and creatives could promote the series.
In a statement by Max, a spokesperson said: “We are extremely grateful to Issa Rae for creating Rap Sh!t, a one-of-a-kind comedy with compelling social commentary that reached viewers in a way only Issa’s talents can accomplish. A huge thank-you to Issa, showrunner Syreeta Singleton and the teams at Hoorae and 3 Arts Entertainment for introducing us to Shawna and Mia, a duo whose journey fans have been invested in and who they have continued to root for through everything. We’ll never get Seduce and Scheme out of our heads, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
