Mattson Tomlin To Write ‘Game of Thrones’ Aegon’s Conquest Spinoff For HBO

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is planning to create spinoff series for the House of the Dragon, the second prequel series within the Game of Thrones HBO franchise. Writer Mattson Tomlin (The Batman, Project Power) has been linked as the writer of the new series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is having discussions to base the series around Aegon’s Conquest, a topic Variety magazine reported a year ago.

The story is based on Aegon Targaryen’s battle of Westeros with his sister wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, along with their dragons. Aegon was able to unify six of the Seven Kingdoms within two years of his campaign.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, source called the project a “back to basics”. However, as The Hollywood Reporter notes, there is no description to what that approach means. Whether the series takes creative liberties on the source material has yet to be said.

The Game of Throne franchise has already spawned several spinoffs with House of the Dragon already in its second season and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which will start production this year. There were conversations for other unnamed series to be produced within the Thrones universe, but HBO has since cancelled all plans for other series until now.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has not shut any doors on other series, saying there’s always a chance for an idea previously brought up to be revised by a new writer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO did not publicly comment on the topic of Mattson Tomlin’s connection to the new series or about Aegon’s Conquest to be produced into an original series or film.

Mattson Tomlin recently co-wrote the Netflix original live-action film adaptation of BRZRKR also co-written by and starring Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, Speed).

Tomlin is repped by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
