Matthew Broderick is Coming to the Small Screen

Matthew Broderick is coming to the small screen. Matthew Broderick from Eighties’ sensation Ferris Bueller’s Day Off will be involved in a new drama/comedy, Daybreak that air on the mega streaming platform, Netflix. This is exciting for two reasons: one, he has signed on to be in a role unlike anything we’ve seen before; two, this role will be the principal, principal Burr, of a high school in a post-apocalyptic world (he probably won’t be able to take any days off).

Additionally to Broderick’s attachment to this project, Netflix will be delivering a show that is a show very much in the vein of high school comedy dramas, which they have been very successful creating since their hit 13 Reasons Why. Since the creation of this show, they have created a lot of content geared toward and about the high school experience—one which has been so controversial that in response people have started petitions to cancel the show and remove it before it ever reaches the platform. However, Insatiable, 13 Reasons Why, and summer debut high school rom-coms such as Sierra Burgess is a Loser, and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before have been tremendously successful and lucrative for the company.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Daybreak will be the first series regular role for theater and film actor Broderick. The actor had signed on to star in Paramount TV’s Bettyville, which has not yet landed at a network, and the delayed Katrina-focused season of FX anthology American Crime Story” (emphasis mine). Since Broderick has not yet been a series regular on a television, we have no idea what to expect.

Daybreak could be wildly successful because of its large fandom that has been following the graphic novel written by Brian Ralph, or big names like Aron Eli Coleite (Star Trek: Discover, Heroes) or Brad Peyton (Frontier, Rampage) who co-created the series. Adding Broderick to the project is just an exciting plus for the 10-episode series.
