‘Marvel’s Runaways’ Ends With Season Three

Marvel’s Runaways will be ending its run after three seasons on Hulu. It’s less of a cancellation, and more of a conclusion, as Variety has reported that the series will have a complete ending and a sense of closure for those who’ve been following the Marvel series since its beginning. Marvel’s Runaways follows the story of six teens who discover they have superpowers as different and unique to each of them as the backgrounds they’re from, while doing battle with their parents who they discover are criminals.

The first season premiered on November 21, 2017 on Hulu, which has been the show’s home for its three season run. It starred Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, and Virginia Gardner as three of the six powerful teenagers. Marvel’s Runaways was co created by Josh Schwarz and Stephanie Savage, who both also created the hit CW show Gossip Girl. Based on the Marvel comic of the same name, Marvel’s Runaways shared a loose connection with the MCU, as did most Marvel shows, and referenced the bigger universe it was a part of on more than one occasion.

Although sources close to Variety have said that the series is ending because its creators feel Marvel’s Runaways has reached the end of its lifespan, it’s also the latest Marvel property outside of Disney+ that’s coming to an end. Last month Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger was also cancelled during Marvel’s purge of its superhero shows. Marvel’s Netflix shows all met a similar fate, as one by one Marvel pulled the plug on those shows as well much to fans’ disappointment.

This last season of Marvel’s Runaways doesn’t mark the end of Marvel’s presence on Hulu, however. Marvel’s Helstrom will be hitting the streaming service sometime in 2020. In addition to that, Marvel will also be producing several animated shows for Hulu such as Howard The Duck, Hit-MonkeyMODOK, and Tigra and Dazzler. The four animated shows will be leading up towards The Offenders, following Marvel’s signature template of uniting different superheroes against a common threat, and will be produced by Jeph Loeb, whose future at Marvel Television has generated much speculation after Kevin Feige was granted all control of Marvel Entertainment. The final season of Marvel’s Runaways will premiere on December 13th.
