Fans of Netflix’s Marvel series can rejoice as steps to continue those narratives in the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe are coming to fruition. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series, Echo, has officially cast Charlie Cox (Stardust, Kin) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Godfather of Harlem, Full Metal Jacket) to reprise their Daredevil roles. Cox and D’Onofrio portrayed the characters Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, respectively, in the 2015 series.
“I am imagining, I am hoping, that our worlds will collide again because the stuff we’ve done in the past was tremendous fun to do, and he’s such an incredible actor,” Cox said in February on reuniting with D’Onofrio via The Hollywood Reporter. D’Onofrio relayed last year that the two actors remained in touch about possible MCU returns.
While details surrounding their characters’ stories remain under wraps, The Hollywood Reporter states sources have alleged Cox’s Murdock will be searching for former ally. According to The Weekly Podcast, this ally is allegedly none other than Jessica Jones, the super-powered P.I. who was portrayed by Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad, Nightbooks) in the Netflix series. There’s no word on Kingpin’s storyline, but one can assume the larger-than-life villain survived his close encounter with his adoptive niece, Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez, at the end of last year’s Hawkeye.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Echo will follow Lopez as she departs New York and returns to her hometown. After learning that her father’s murder was orchestrated by her uncle Fisk, the Indigenous deaf hero will seek solace, reconnecting to her Native American roots. Along with Cox, the cast includes Tantoo Cardinal (Falls Around Her, Smoke Signals), Cody Lightning (Manic, Edge of America), Graham Greene (Dances With Wolves, The Wolf and the Lion), Devery Jacobs (The Order, Reservation Dogs), and Chaske Spencer (Shouting Secrets, Wild Indian). Zhan McClarnon (Dark Winds, Longmire) who portrayed Maya’s father William Lopez in Hawkeye, will reprise his role.
Canceled in 2018, Netflix’s Daredevil ran for three seasons and starred Cox as the blind hero of Hell’s Kitchen. Cox also portrayed the role in The Defenders, a 2017 limited series that saw him join forces with the other three Netflix heroes Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. All Marvel series at Netflix, which also included Jon Bernthal’s (We Own This City, The Walking Dead) The Punisher, came to an end as Disney prepared to announce its own streaming service in 2019.
D’Onofrio’s corporate gangster Kingpin appeared in the first and third seasons of Daredevil. His recent appearance in Hawkeye stirred rumors of the previous Marvel series’ actors reprising their roles in other Marvel projects. Soon enough, Cox officially rejoined the MCU with his big cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home as the “really good lawyer” who counseled Tom Holland’s Peter Parker at the beginning of the film. Disney+ also recently became the new home for all six of the former Netflix series.
Marvel’s Echo is currently in production in Atlanta and is set to debut in 2023 on Disney+.
