As Marvel Studios gears up to launch its first animated series, it reportedly won’t be their last. According to Variety, VP of Film Production Victoria Alonso has confirmed that Marvel will be working on more animated projects like What If….? “We have so much coming your way that you might tell us, ‘Okay, take a break now!'” she said via Variety.
What If?… is an animated series that explores what would happen if major events within the MCU occurred differently. The series is set to have ten episodes and will stream exclusively on Disney+.
“We’re super excited about animation, which is my first love,” she said. Alonso served as an executive producer on both WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which have earned a total of 28 Emmy nominations, but the studio has a multitude of projects filming, scheduled, and in development.
While What If…? will be Marvel’s first animated series, it definitely will not be the last. “We’re going to have our animation branch and mini studio, and there will be more to come from that as well,” Alonso said.
Alonso also noted the studio’s excitement for their new content on Disney+, calling it a “gift” for allowing the studio to expand on current characters and establish even more from the Marvel Comics library into the MCU.
Alonso emphasized that balance was “key” in ensuring that the crew behind their films and series are better storytellers, executives, and people, and listening to what fans want to see was important as well. “If there is a vast majority that feels that something is not hitting home, then we need to look at it, but then there’s times where we say, ‘You know what, this is a story we’re gonna tell,” she said.
What If…? will premiere on August 11, streaming exclusively on Disney+.
