The Marvel news never seems to stop.
Just two weeks after Freeform gave Marvel’s New Warriors a straight-to-series order we now have the full team line-up. According to ComicBook.com the TV series team will include Squirrel Girl/Doreen Green, Mister Immortal/Craig Hollis, Night Thrasher/Dwayne Taylor, Speedball/Robbie Baldwin, Microbe/Zack Smith and Debrii/Deborah Fields.
Marvel’s New Warriors is a first official foray into straight-up comedy for the comics giant. The series will focus on the six New Warriors as they work and live together while trying to make an impact on the world. It sounds like the aim is for a John Hughes-esque, coming-of-age series that will focus on grappling with adulthood as well as superpowers.
Along with the announcement of the line-up itself, Marvel also released character descriptions for each of the New Warriors. Squirrel Girl, who can naturally talk to squirrels, is an energetic fangirl who is never without her pet squirrel Tippy Toe. Mister Immortal cannot die, which feeds into his cocky, troublemaker personality. Night Thrasher is the “Batman” of the bunch in that he comes from a rich and family and has no superpowers except for his deeply held belief in justice. Speedball is a reckless, immature class-clown who has the ability to launch kinetic balls of energy that he has little control over. Microbe is a quiet and reserved hypochondriac who can speak to germs to find out where people have been and what they’ve been up to. Finally, Debrii is a quick-witted telekinetic who isn’t afraid to speak her mind.
Debrii also joins Jessica Jones’ Jeri Hogarth (Carrie Anne-Moss) as a proudly open lesbian in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with USA Today, showrunner Kevin Biegel relayed his hopes for the character. “It’s not all bout ‘Hey, I relate to the show because I want to have a squirrel tail,’ but ‘Hey, this is the story about someone who’s out as a lesbian and maybe it’s not that easy.”
Marvel has had success in TV so far with shows on Netflix and ABC, and Freeform looks to be the next Marvel stop. Along with New Warriors, Freeform also has Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger starring Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt (watch the trailer here).
New Warriors comes from Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. Biegel will executive produce with Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.
