Sony Television is developing a TV series featuring Marvel Comics’ Silk. According to Variety, the Spider-Man universe character will come to life from a script written by Lauren Moon (Good Trouble, Atypical), with Phil Lord (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Connected) and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie: The Second Part) executive producing.
In Spider-Man lore, Silk is Korean-American teenager Cindy Moon, via Variety. She’s a classmate of Peter Parker who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 comic in 2014. After being bitten by a radioactive arachnid, Cindy gains spidey powers including super speed and heightened senses. Actress Tiffany Espensen (Kirby Buckets, Hop) portrayed Moon on the big screen in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming which starred Tom Holland (The Devil All the Time, Onward).
While there is no definite network or streaming service linked to the show, Variety reports Amazon Prime has been rumored to be the series’ final home.
With Sony owning the rights to Spider-Man, they have been steadily building their own cinematic universe centering the friendly neighborhood hero. According to Variety, the success of Lord and Miller’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse prompted talks of an eventual spin-off featuring various Spider-heroines. And the producing duo’s new deal with Sony granted them range to develop series across multiple platforms and streaming services.
Marvel has a steep live-action TV series history. Before being under one roof, Marvel’s TV division developed shows like Netflix’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, according to Variety. Elsewhere Marvel’s Runaways ran for three seasons at Hulu, and Cloak and Dagger aired for two on Freeform. In 2013, ABC helmed Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, which just held its series finale in August. Disney+ will continue this tradition with slew of series featuring actors and story arcs directly from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Variety. The first of these series, Falcon & the Winter Soldier, is set to premiere sometime this year.
