Marc Maron (End Times Fun) is not happy about Netflix cancelling GLOW. A critically acclaimed and multiple Emmy Award winning comedy about struggling actresses becoming wrestlers in the eighties, the sudden cancellation came as a shock to everyone involved. Maron announced that Netflix should let GLOW wrap everything up in a movie, so cast members and audiences can have some form of resolution via Indiewire.
GLOW was on track to film a final fourth season, but then COVID-19 happened and production shut down. Though some shows have since been able to continue production with safety protocols and guidelines, it proved near impossible for GLOW. On a show where actors were constantly picking each other up and intertwining bodies, there was no way to safely film during a pandemic. Therefore, Netflix followed through with cancelling the eccentric, predominantly female ensemble comedy.
Maron portrayed Sam Slyvia, a struggling drug addict and director of the women’s wrestling TV show. Consistently doing Instagram live videos, Maron discussed GLOW’s cancellation with his followers on Tuesday. In a statement picked up by Indiewire, he said, “Let us wrap it up in a two-hour Netflix movie. Give the showrunners and the cast and the writers the chance to finish the story in a movie, right? Then it’s all fine. That would take the financial pressure off and the writers could play it out, we could shoot it out…The thing about shooting a movie is that when you have the whole shooting script you can be economical about your shooting. I think they could do it in less time than it would take to shoot the show.” Along with Maron, many other stars of GLOW took to social media and other outlets to share their disappointment of its cancellation.
Betty Gilpin (The Hunt) portrayed Debbie, a working single mom and star on the wrestling show. For her performance, she was nominated three times at the Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In the wake of its cancellation, Gilpin wrote an article for Vanity Fair on Thursday. Detailing her time on the show, she explained why Debbie was the best role she’ll ever have.

GLOW was known for its tackling of prevalent societal issues, including the me too movement, race, sexual orientation, and class. All three seasons are still available to stream on Netflix.
