As Deadline reports, the British crime drama mini-series Adolescence has made an impressive achievement. With only three weeks since its release date, it has blown past its competitors to become one of the most popular series of all time on Netflix.
Adding 3.4 million views last week, it now sits at 96.7 million views. This puts the new series at the number 9 spot on the all-time Most Popular English TV list, jumping over well-established shows like Stranger Things and Bridgerton. Deadline claims that the show may even reach as far as number 3 on the list as it still has 72 days left in its “premiere window.”
Making waves across the globe, Adolescence has skyrocketed to the Top Ten charts in all countries where statistics are available. No small feat indeed.
Looking at Tudum by Netflix, we can see that sitting at the highly coveted top spot of all-time English shows is the cult following Adam’s Family spin-off, Wednesday. With lead actress like Jenna Ortega (Jane the Virgin, Stuck in the Middle) and season two already wrapped, it’s doubtful the supernatural coming-of-age drama will be dethroned any time soon — especially considering it has over 100k more plays than its closest competitor, Stranger Things 4.
Hanging out at the number 4 and number 5 spots are 5-year-old Bridgerton: Season 1 and The Queen’s Gambit. Considering how much of a hit the latter was, it really highlights the impressive ascendance of Adolescence to accumulate almost as many plays in only three weeks.
Shows like The Night Agent: Season 1 and Fool Me Once are barely ahead of Adolescence with less than 200k plays stopping them from being edged out by the meteoric rise of the British crime drama.
As mxdwn previously reported, the show’s message against social media harm and misogyny drew the attention of the UK’s Prime Minister. He plans to stream the show to schools in the United Kingdom for free to draw attention to these topics. This may have something to do with its spectacular viewership. All episodes of the limited series are currently available on Netflix.
