Among eight total honorees, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever) will be the recipient of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television’s Radius Award, according to Variety. The Netflix star will be honored during Canadian Screen Week for being a Canadian whose work is being noticed on a global scale.
Ramakrishnan began starring in Netflix’s coming of age dramedy, Never Have I Ever, in 2020 as Devi Vishwakumar. The series has since released two seasons with a third on the way. Loosely based on the life of comedian and actress Mindy Kaling (The Office), Never Have I Ever, centers around an Indian-American 15-year-old from Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles who must simultaneously deal with her struggling social status, how she defines her Indian identity, maintaining a high GPA, and above all, the grief from the death of her father. Ramakrishnan, born in Ontario, will be given her award for her role as Devi during Canadian Screen Week, which will take place from April 4 through April 10.
Alongside Ramakrishnan, other honorees include journalist Rassi Nashalik (Igalaaq), for the Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism, and Kayla Grey (The Shift with Kayla Grey), Kathleen Newman-Bremang (Canada Tonight with Ginella Massa), and Amanda Parris (CBC Arts: Exhibitionists) for the Changemaker Award, which commends those in the Canadian media community who are devoted to calling out systemic racism and discrimination and exhibiting diversity in their fields.
