Prime Video has unveiled a wonderful first-look of the much-anticipated limited series Expats by Lulu Wang. Scheduled for release in early 2024. According to Deadline, the series’ feature-length penultimate episode will be showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8th. The 6-part limited series, which is based on the best-selling novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, boasts a cast including Nicole Kidman(Eyes Wide Shut), Sarayu Blue(I Feel Bad), Ji-young Yoo(Smoking Tigers), Brian Tee(Chicago Med), and Jack Huston(Game Of Thrones).
Expats is set in vivid and eventful Hong Kong during 2014 and explores the lives of three American women, Margaret (played by Kidman), Hilary (portrayed by Blue), and Mercy (enacted by Yoo). Following an unexpected tragedy that shakes their world, the women’s lives become intertwined in a thought-provoking and poignant manner. The series delves into the concept of privilege and delves into the intricacies of victimhood and culpability. The roles of Margaret’s husband, Clarke, and Hilary’s husband, David, are played by Brian Tee and Jack Huston, respectively.
Wang adeptly fulfills the roles of creator, director, and writer for Expats, whilst also assuming the mantle of executive producer alongside Daniele Melia for Local Time. The illustrious Nicole Kidman stands as executive producer for the series, alongside Per Saari for Blossom Films (of Rabbit Hole and Nine Perfect Strangers fame). Alice Bell (who was the first writer to join the project and acclaimed for her work on The Beautiful Lie) also contributes as a producer. As if this luminous team weren’t enough, Theresa Park for Per Capita Productions (notable for After Yang), and Stan Wlodkowski (of The Old Guard fame) also lend their expert skills as executive producers. Vera Miao (famed for Two Sentence Horror), Gursimran Sandhu (best known for Game of Thrones), together with the celebrated author Janice Y. K. Lee, hold writer credits for Expats, joining forces with Bell and Wang.
