With the official series release of the highly anticipated Lanterns, which arrived on August 16, numerous footage clips have shown its gritty detective-style plot, surrounding the partnership between John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre (Old, Krypton), and Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler (Bloodline, Anniversary), as they investigate strange cases in small town. According to Comicbook, the opening scene of the first episode has shown that the year is 1996 and that John, who is at odds with his mentor due to how he was raised by his soldier father, has been in possession of the ring for at least 10 years.
According to Comicbook, there is one scene within the episodes that seems to have put out an interesting introduction of the DC’s Green Lantern lore. The scene in question is when Hal on the news, where he was called ““Earth’s first Green Lantern”, which he didn’t dispute and followed it by saying, ” “Yeah, I guess that’s true”. The character who unfortunately won’t be making an appearance is Alan Scott—the original Green Lantern, who actually predates Hal Jordan by about 20 years.
Reported by Comicbook, there is a simple reason behind why Alan will not be making an appearance: the character predates the DCU’s sci-fi mythos. Back in the comics, it was stated that Alan’s powers are more magic-based, originating from the Starheart, rather than powered by the Central Power Battery on Oa like many members of the Green Lantern Corps. Additionally, the creative team behind the new Lanterns series wanted to ground the story in gritty sci-fi. They felt that introducing magical elements would disrupt the grounded tone and throw the narrative into disarray.
It would seem that Alan Scott’s Green Lantern adventure has been dealt its final chapter before it ever saw the light of day. The first episode of Lanterns is available to stream on HBO Max, with new episode released weekly every Sunday.
