In a momentous move by Marvel, everyone’s favorite bad guy, Loki, has been revealed to be bisexual. The Asgardian god of mischief, played by Tom Hiddleston (The Night Manager), becomes the first openly bisexual character in the Marvel cinematic universe.
Via TVLine, the big news on Loki’s sexuality was broken late Wednesday night in the third installment of the new hit Disney+ show, Loki. The episode, titled “Lamentis,” will be a landmark one for the comic behemoth for more than the shock-inducing plot.
With a glaring lack of LGBTQ+ representation in their movies, Marvel seemed to be behind the curve. Wednesday night’s reveal is a huge step in the right direction for bringing diversity to the big screen. The fact that it was a fan-favorite character that had been a major part of the Marvel story since the beginning makes the moment all the more important for the franchise.
Loki will not be alone for long as Marvel has already announced that Brian Tyree Henry’s (Atlanta) character, Phastos, in the upcoming film, Eternals, will be the first openly gay member in the MCU.
Fans were not the only ones ecstatic about the reveal. In a Tweet obtained by TVLine, the director of the episode, Kate Herron (Smear), said, “From the moment I joined @LokiOfficial it was very important to me, and my goal, to acknowledge Loki was bisexual.” She went on to add, “I know this is a small step but I’m happy, and heart is so full, to say this is now Canon in #mcu.”
Now, with Loki at its midpoint in its run, fans have to be impressed with how much the showrunners have been able to pack into the first three episodes. Let’s hope that the final three episodes are equally with the magical thrills and huge moments that have made the show so popular.
