The stars are out tonight at the 81st annual Golden Globes. The award show will be airing at 5:00 pm PST and will be hosted by comedian Jo Koy. This year, the beloved red carpet will not be aired on E! as many may expect, but viewers will still be able to get a glimpse of the Hollywood glam on Variety’s YouTube and other internet platforms. The nominees for tonight’s awards in television were announced on December 11, with Succession, Only Murders In The Building, and The Bear in the lead for total nominations in the television department. The awards show will be airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+, so grab your popcorn and follow along here on our live blog to get all the updates for the night!
3:30 pm PST: Hosted by Variety’s Marc Malkin and ET’s Rachel Smith, the 81st annual Golden Globes pre-show presented by Variety begins with interviews with nominees from every corner of television. The night’s interviews kicked off with Malkin talking with Matt Bomer, nominee for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series for the show Fellow Travelers, and talked about how grateful he is for the project and his experience in reading for the film Barbie. Malkin then talked to Best Supporting Actor Television nominee Billy Crudup about the crazy storylines that were in action in the series he was nominated for, The Morning Show (spoiler alert, the storyline took them to space!).
3:44 pm PST: Smith chatted with nominee Natasha Lyonne. Lyonne was nominated for Best Actor in a TV Series for her performance in the series Poker Face. She “rocked her poker face” on the carpet and kept her cool and usual dry sense of humor as she joked about bringing poker to the Globes at her own table. She also gushed over her fantastic dress, topped off with some funky boots that she showed off proudly.
3:50 pm PST: Malkin got to hang out with the one and only Kieran Culkin who is nominated for Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama for his work in Succession. After an introduction with some comments on Culkin’s bracelets containing his children’s names, he was asked about the idea of a spin-off of Succession based around his character. He then shot it down almost immediately calling it a “horrible idea” and confirming that he really does not like spin-offs in general.
4:17 pm PST: Brie Larson, nominated for Best Actress in a Limited Series for her role in Lessons in Chemistry checked in and was asked about the show and how she felt about the adaptation of a book into a series. She talked about how important it is to stay true to the original book’s narrative and honor the book’s messages. All while wearing a gorgeous Periwinkle Prada gown.
5:00 pm PST: Koy took the stage with his opening monologue and was met with some mixed reception. As some of his jokes fell flat, he exclaimed to the audience “I got this gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up You’re kidding me right? … I wrote some of these [jokes] and they are the ones you are laughing at.” He then continues to go around the room poking jokes at the nominees met with some uncomfortable laughter.
5:25 pm PST: Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) and Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, Mamma Mia)took the stage to announce Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series. The Golden Globe went to Ali Wong for his performance in Beef. After giving Bill Hader a smooch, she made her way to the stage to accept her award. She then thanked her family and highlighted her children in her acceptance speech upon her win.
5:28 pm PST: Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) and Justin Hartley (This Is Us) then took the stage to announce Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series. the Golden Globe went to Steven Yeun for his performance in Beef and made a joke about his journey as an actor and equated it to the plot of Frozen.
Yeun and Wong are now the first Asian actors to win in the category.
5:38 pm PST: Juliette took the stage to announce Best Supporting Actor on Television. The actress Elizabeth Debicki took the Globe home for her role as Princess Diana in The Crown. Ray Romano and Keri Russel then got up to announce the Actor’s award in the same category. Matthew Macfadyen took it home for his role in the series Succession, starting the anticipated Succession sweep of the television category.
5:55 pm PST: George Lopez announced the winner for Best Actor in a TV Series Musical or Comedy. After starting with a muted expletive, he announced Jeremy Allan White as the winner for his work in The Bear. He thanked everyone from FX, the crew, and the cast of the series. Right after that, Jim Gaffigan took the stage to announce the brand-new category Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on television. He took the time to do a small stand-up set himself and talked about how hard it can be to be a part of stand-up comedy and then said “Thanks to Netflix… people get overpaid for it.”. The award then went to Ricky Gervais who was not in attendance at the award show and Gaffigan accepted it on his behalf.
6:15 pm PST: America Ferrera swooned over Kevin Costner as they announced the winners for Best Actress in a TV Series Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a TV Series Drama. Aye Edebiri brought it home for the comedy for her role in The Bear and wrapped up her speech by saying “If I forgot to thank you, I’m sorry… unless you were mean or something.” Keiran Culkin then brought the award home for the TV Drama category for his work in Succession, making this the second award that the series has won tonight. In his acceptance speech, Culkin jokingly told his friend Pedro Pascal to “suck it”, which was met with laughs from the Mandalorian actor. He was previously nominated 20 years ago for Igby Goes Down.
7:11 pm PST: The award for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television went to the series Beef, making it the third award the series has won tonight. The Bear then walked away with the award for Best Television Series Musical or Comedy. This is their third award of the night.
7:24 pm PST: Dua Lipa and Elizabeth Taylor presented the award for Best Performance in a Television Series- Drama. After their introduction about the variety of accents in the category, they announced Sarah Snook as the winner for Succession. After that, Suits stars resented the award for Best Television Series- Drama which went to, unsurprisingly, Succession and highlighted the work of the writers in the series.
7:35 pm PST: Kristin Wiig and Will Ferrel went on stage to present and was oddly interrupted by some goofy music. As they continued to speak, the music would interrupt them more and more until the two couldn’t contain themselves and just HAD to dance around to their “favorite song”. A favorite moment of the night, they had the audience laughing as they did what they did best, comedy.
8:00 pm PST- The night ended with the final awards going out to the major film categories. Oppenheimer and Poor Things took home the Best Motion Picture awards.
At the end of the night, Succession topped the TV awards with four total wins. With a night filled with a questionable opening monologue, presenters having fun on stage, and some historical wins, the 81st Annual Golden Globes were a hit.
