An American Horror Story alum will become First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s closest confidante. Lily Rabe (Baby Driver) has joined the cast of The First Lady, the upcoming Showtime anthology series, as Lorena “Hick” Hickock, a close friend and rumored lover to Roosevelt, via Variety.
The series is described as a reframing of American leadership, told through the eyes of the women at the White House. Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) will play Eleanor Roosevelt, in addition to Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) playing Michelle Obama and Michelle Pfieffer (Batman Returns) as Betty Ford.
Author Aaron Cooley (Four Seats: A Thriller of the Supreme Court) created the series and will also write and executive produce alongside Davis and her husband, Julius Tennon (Lila & Eve), Cathy Schulman (Crash), Jeff Gaspin (L.A.’s Finest), and Brad Kaplin (Mr. Church).
Lorena Hickok was a pioneering journalist who became the best-known female reporter by 1932. She was a devoted friend and mentor to First Lady Roosevelt. The nature of her friendship with Roosevelt has sparked debate amongst historians and scholars, with some believing that their relationship was romantic.
The Roosevelt portion of the series will also include Kiefer Sutherland (Designated Survivor) as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ellen Burstyn (House of Cards) as FDR’s mother Sara Delano Roosevelt, and Cailee Spade (Mare of Easttown) as Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, Roosevelt’s first daughter.
Rabe is best known for her roles on American Horror Story on FX, The Underground Railroad on Amazon Prime, and Tell Me Your Secrets on Amazon Prime.
The First Lady is expected to premiere on Showtime sometime in 2021.
