Hulu recently announced that Lily Gladstone (Billions, The Last Manhunt) is the latest addition to the cast of the new limited series Under the Bridge, according to Deadline. The series is based on the 1997 true story written by Rebbeca Godfrey (The Torn Skirt).
The show follows the story of Reena Virk, a fourteen-year-old who was on her way to join her friends at a party but never returned home. Godfrey takes the audience into the hidden world of the seven teenage girls and a boy accused of the savage murder, revealing the shocking truths about the unlikely killer.
Godfrey was a rebellious novel writer who returned to her hometown of Victoria, BC in 1997 and immersed herself in the strange and mysterious case of Virk’s murder. As a young woman, Godfrey was trusted more easily by the teenagers accused of the crime, leading to them telling her a unique version of the story.
According to Deadline, the regular series cast, which Gladstone completed, includes Riley Keough (The Terminal List, The Devil All the Time) who will be playing the author Godfrey; Archie Panjabi (Departure, Blindspot) plays Suman Virk, the mother of Reena; Vritika Gupta (Cross Hollow, Say Goodbye) will be playing Reena Virk, the teenager who gets murdered; Javon “Wanna” Walton (The Umbrella Academy, Euphoria) stars as Warren, a baby-faced kid who might be hiding something dark; and, Aiyana Goodfellow (The Outlaws, I Used to Be Famous) will portray Dusty, a friend of Reena’s, who feels guilty about what happened. The series has also cast Izzy G (AJ and the Queen, B Positive), Chloe Guidry (The Last Tycoon, Walk the Prank), and Ezra Faroque Khan (EastEnders, Granada Nights) in unknown roles.
In the series, Gladstone will be portraying Cam Bentland. Cam is described, via Deadline, as the only woman of color on the police force in Victoria, BC who is used to pretending to be ‘one of the boys.’ The character of Cam is also deeply moralistic and a hard worker with a strong faith in the justice system she was raised in, even if she has witnessed how it never serves people like herself. Throughout the show, she will be forced to come to terms with her own repression around her queer sexuality and identity, leading her to question what is considered ‘normal’ in her work. This will cause her to rise above to do the job as she believes it should be done.
The show will be executive produced by Samir Mahta (Fear the Walking Dead, Tell Me Lies) and Liz Tigelaar (Casual, Nashville), who will also be working as showrunners. Keough will also executive produce alongside Gina Gammell (War Pony, Welcome the Stranger) via their production company Felix Culpa. Also executive producing is Quinn Sheppard (Blame) who is in charge of the book adaptation. Godfrey, who sadly passed away two months ago, was also an executive producer for the show and will be getting the credit posthumously. Other executive producers include Stacey Silverman (The Lying Game, How to Rock) via Tigelaar’s Best Day Ever production company, and newcomer Geeta Vasant Patel, who will also direct.
Under the Bridge is still in pre-production and no release date has been given. Production is set to begin on December 2022.
