‘Life & Beth’ Season Two Landed On Hulu With Jennifer Coolidge Cameo

The second season of Hulu’s Life & Beth, the dramedy series starring Amy Schumer (Trainwreck, Snatched) and Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Superbad), just dropped, and with special guest! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Coolidge (American Pie, Legally Blonde) makes a cameo as a psychic in an almost two-minute new teaser from the third episode of the season released yesterday. In the clip, Coolidge plays a psychic named Madame de Merde from none other than New Orleans.

According to the teaser, the Emmy-Award-winning actress for her work on The White Lotus is booked by Beth, played by Schumer, for a psychic reading, along with Amy Sedaris (Puss in Boots, Elf), who plays a New Orleans wedding planner in the episode. Yet, as the clip progresses, it becomes clear that Beth does not get a good vibe from the interaction.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Schumer shared a fun anecdote about Coolidge and Sedaris initially playing opposite roles, with Coolidge playing Sedaris’ wedding planner character and Sedaris as the psychic. It was only at the last minute that they thought it would be funnier to do a role swap.

Schumer sat down with PureWow to discuss how Coolidge came to be on the show. According to Schumer, Coolidge had a residence in New Orleans where the episode was set, and the timing worked well.

“[It was] just meant to be, and I think I’ve never laughed harder than working with her. I just loved her, she made me laugh so hard,” said Schumer via The Hollywood Reporter.

Life & Beth is based on Schumer’s own life. The Hollywood Reporter notes that after a long two years since its season one debut, season two will chronicle John, played by Cera, and Beth’s relationship as it “grows more serious” and how “Beth begins to examine the possibilities of marriage and having a family as she and John seek answers for their communication problems. Is Beth’s traumatic history with men, and people she trusted from her youth destined to repeat itself? And what is triggering her fears? Beth does her best to keep her relationships alive while struggling to support friends and family who are all facing their own problems while entering their fourth decade,” reads the official synopsis.

Violet Young (Chicago P.D., Genius: MLK/X) and Susannah Flood (Chicago Fire, Deadbeat) have returned for season two. Several other recurring guest stars are in the mix, such as Laura Benanti (Worth, Gossip Girl), LaVar Walker (Uncle Drew, Rel), Kevin Kane (Inside Amy Schumer, The Irishman), Sas Goldberg (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Shrink Next Door), Yamaneika Saunders (Hipster Vice, Inside Amy Schumer), Rosebud Baker (Inside Jokes, Saturday Night Live), Michael Rapaport (Deep Blue Sea, True Romance) and Arielle Siegel (When They See Us, God Friended Me).

The series is directed, written and executively produced by Schumer alongside Ryan McFaul (Lady Dynamite, Crashing), Daniel Powell (Ugly Americans, That Damn Michael Che) and Kane. Life & Beth is produced by Fifth Season.
