The TV adaptation of a prolific film has garnered a second season. According to Deadline, Apple TV has renewed Presumed Innocent ahead of its final two episodes. The limited drama series premiered exactly a month ago today.
Apple TV+ found success as the summer series was named the streamer’s most-viewed drama of all time, according to Deadline. The story lifts its narrative from the film, which starred Harrison Ford (Air Force One, Shrinking) in the lead role. The film was an adaptation of John Turow’s 1987 novel. Turow continued the story in 1990’s The Burden of Proof, following a character from the same universe. No details have been shared about the second season other than it will feature a “brand new case.”
The series stars Jake Gyllenhall (Road House, End of Watch) as Rusty Sabich, a prolific Chicago attorney who finds himself the number one suspect in the murder of a colleague and former lover. The series also stars Ruth Negga (Preacher, Passing), Peter Sarsgaard (Orphan, Jarhead), Bill Camp (Dark Waters, The Queen’s Gambit), Elizabeth Marvel (Swallow, Love & Death), and Renate Reinsve (Handling the Undead, A Different Man). Gyllenhall is attached as an executive producer along with J.J. Abrams (Batman: The Caped Crusader, Alias), and creator David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, The Practice). Turow serves as co-executive producer.
Presumed Innocent is the latest limited series to magically receive a second season as streamers search for the next big IP to win with audiences. Deadline reports Apple TV delivered a similar fate to the action thriller, Hijack, starring Idris Elba. The airplane heist series previously held the second-best record behind comedy Ted Lasso. Other examples of the practice include this year’s Shōgun and HBO’s White Lotus and Big Little Lies.
While no synopsis exists, Turow’s books could map a prospective story. Deadline reports a character that appeared in the original novel and film was not present in the series. They could be the next season’s protagonist. Another route would be the original novel’s sequel, 2011’s Innocent, which follows Rusty battling former colleague, Tommy Molto, over another mysterious murder.
The final two episodes arrive on July 17 and July 24 only on Apple TV+.
