ABC has canceled Lauren Cohan’s TV show, Whiskey Cavalier. After only one season, the network decided to pull the plug on the action comedy-drama. The show gained lot of momentum when Cohan was cast because of her previous work in The Walking Dead where Cohan played the role of Maggie, who in the show, leaves Hilltop to join Georgie’s (Jayne Atkinson) community.
Whiskey Cavalier didn’t meet rating expectations for the network. In Live+7, the series hit 1.3 rating in adults 18-49 and had only 6.9 million viewers an episode. It’s become ABC’s lowest-rated show this season. Another factor for the cancellation was Warner Bros. TV which produces Whiskey Cavalier. ABC and Warner Bros. TV couldn’t meet eye-to-eye on some decision-making.
Cohan’s sudden departure from the zombie-infested world to a spy-thriller wasn’t something fans of The Walking Dead had expected, but it didn’t come without reason.
“I was just like, I’ve done this show for a long time,” said Cohan. “It was a long time to play a character, and sometimes you just get quiet and listen to your inner guidance and it’s time to multitask.”
Cohan has been a part of The Walking Dead universe since season two. Showrunner Angela Kang and Cohan have had many discussions about Maggie’s development.
“It’s partly having active conversations all the time with Angela and with Scott,” said Cohan. “But it’s mostly [because] in one way I was like: Wouldn’t it be cool if he had just some epic hero’s death and it was over? And then I get so sad because I’m like: No, because the potential for what worlds we could create — it’s like, ‘Hey, guys, you didn’t know this was happening, but by the way, come with us and come and explore this.’”
Having played the character for so many years had understandably built an attachment for Cohan.
“It’s the weirdest thing and I would never know it until I was in this situation, [but] I think about Maggie all the time. She’s always, like, inside of me. This sounds weird, but she is. It’s partly knowing the story is continuing, the story is unfinished,” Cohan told EW.
Cohan made it clear that Maggie’s time on The Walking Dead is far from over.
“And obviously the impact and amount of time with Maggie, that’s such a huge part of me, and my life, and my life as an actor, and my coming to as an actor, and everything,” Cohan said. “So no, it’s definitely not done. I’m way too sentimental a person.”
With Whiskey Cavalier no longer on Cohan’s schedule, the actress can no doubt make her way back to the apocalyptic world sooner than anticipated.
The Walking Dead is currently filming season 10 which will be due out in the fall.
Despite the cancellation, Whiskey Cavalier still has two more episodes left this season with the next one to air on Wednesday.
