Late Night With Seth Meyers (Saturday Night Live) is staying on the air for some more time with the current beloved host. According to Deadline, the late-night talk show has renewed its time with Meyers through 2020. Although we are going to get some more time with Meyers, the show has dropped the house band due to budget cuts in the show.
For the first time in 44 years, Late Night will not have a permanent house band. Up until now, the 8G band, which was lead by fellow comedian Fred Armisen serves as the house band. But, as the show moves forward, they have officially been cut and will no longer be featured due to an alleged cost-saving measure, Deadline confirmed. This decision was revealed by the associate musical director of Late Night, Eli Janney.
The music director explained in an interview with Vulture that it is not only due to budget cuts but also because of the shrinking size of broadcast television due to streaming and YouTube. He explains that today, the value of music and media is starting to decrease.
“Sadly, it’s the reality of broadcast and a shrinking market — streaming eating into this, and YouTube eating into that,” he said to Vulture. “Streaming is not making money, either. So budgets everywhere have been cut and cut and cut. I liken it to a Spotify moment in music, where suddenly it’s like, Nobody wants to pay for music. Music gets devalued.”
In the interview, Janney also explained that the showrunner of Late Night, Mike Shoemaker and Meyers did in fact inform the band more than a month ago that their time with the show would be coming to an end. Although the band will no longer be playing their music live on the air, they will still make music for the show itself.
The 8G band includes Armisen, Janney, Seth Jabour, and Syd Butler.
