According to a Warner Bros. Discovery press release, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has been renewed for an eleventh season. The new season debuts on Sunday, February 18th at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.
The series is a satire information news program that covers specific topics that other news outlets are not covering. Utilizing Oliver’s (Community, The Lion King) comedic background, Oliver looks at the current political climate and attempts to provide information to those unaware of the situation while being entertaining. The goal of the program is to “inform and entertain.”
The series has been renewed through 2026. Season ten wrapped up in December 2023 following a break due to the writers’ strike. Production on season ten started on April 30, 2023 and picked back up after the strike on October 1, 2023.
Since the series debuted in 2014, they have earned 28 Emmys. The series has won writing and program Emmys for eight straight years. At the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, the series won in the new category of Outstanding Scripted Variety Series and the category of Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. The series has also earnedfive Critics Choice Awards, two GLAAD Media Awards, two Peabody Awards, eight consecutive PGA Awards and six Writers Guild Awards. In 2024, the series was nominated for a DGA Award in the categories for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Variety/Talk/News/Sports and for Outstanding Producer of Live Entertainment, Variety, Sketch, Standup & Talk Television.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is produced for HBO by Avalon and Peyance Productions; executive produced by Oliver, Tim Carvell (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Planet Tad), Liz Stanton (The Chris Rock Show, Wanda Sykes: I’ma Be Me), James Taylor (Taskmaster, The Russell Howard Hour) and Jon Thoday (Breeders, Catastrophe). The series is directed by Paul Pennolino (Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, The Problem with Jon Stewart).
