Larry David (Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm) was revealed to be behind former President Barack Obama’s “tan suit” controversy on the final episode of sketch comedy miniseries Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, as first reported by Deadline. As one of the final moments of the series, which retells numerous American historical events through David’s signature comedic lens, the comedian spills a Mango Tango on the 44th President’s normal suit jacket before recommending the infamous tan suit to conceal his mistake.

“You’re casual, and (the meeting’s) in the briefing room,” David assures a hesitant Obama, who plays himself in the clip, and worries that the suit is “too casual.” “It’s not in the East Room.”

The idea for the sketch originates from the backlash the President received to a press conference he gave in mid-2014, in which he wore a tan suit while discussing the potential escalation of the American military’s current presence in Syria. Several conservative mainstays criticized Obama’s choice of attire, with Republican Peter King calling it “unpresidential” for the topic of discussion (per Intelligencer). Contemporary liberals in turn defended the President and accused Republicans of purposefully inflating the importance of the suit amidst a slow news cycle. Today, after three presidential terms of what feels like never-ending controversy, the “tan suit controversy” seems quaint to most Americans by comparison.

“It is a great suit,” Obama acquiesces as Larry feigns approval (per Deadline). When the President merges from the fitting room, the comedian remarks that the suit is “pretty good! Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.” In a classic case of dramatic irony, he assures him that “people are going to be talking about this for a long, long time.”

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness executive producer Jeff Schaffer (The League, Dave) commented on Obama’s cameo in a subsequent interview with Deadline. “When you’re doing a show about American history,” Schaffer remarked, “you want to do it warts and right now we have this orange saggy wart that we wish would go away. “But the nice thing about having President Obama produce this and be a part of it is that this country’s had a lot of fuck ups, we’ve seemed to have learned very little, but we’re still moving forward sometimes, and then we move back a little bit, but we always move forward again. While Larry’s pointing out a lot of the steps back, the President is telling us we can still step forward.”
