Kumail Nanjiani Working on TV Adaptation of ‘My Beautiful Launderette’

Writer, actor, and comedian Kumail Nanjiani is coming off of the biggest year of his career. His romantic comedy The Big Sick was one of the most beloved and acclaimed films of 2017, and some believe it will even earn some Oscar nominations. Now, coming into 2018, Nanjiani has his eye on television.

In addition to the upcoming season 5 of his HBO comedy Silicon Valley, IndieWire reports that Nanjiani is currently working on another project this year: adapting the 1986 film My Beautiful Launderette for television. Nanjiani is reportedly attached to co-star and write the series.

My Beautiful Launderette starred Gordon Warnecke and Daniel Day-Lewis as two gay men who ran a laundromat in London. Specific details of Nanjiani’s adaptation of the film have not yet been released; it is not yet clear if the television series will be set in modern day or transfer the setting to the United States. However, the television series is intent on keeping the sharp social commentary the original film carried on issues such as LGBT rights, racial politics, and immigration.

Nanjiani will executive produce the project alongside Alec Berg, who also serves as producer on Silicon Valley. Screenwriter Stephen Gaghan and video company Super Deluxe will also produce the series, marking Nanjiani’s adaptation one of Super Deluxe’s first ventures into television.
