‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight’, a ‘Game of Thrones’ Dunk & Egg Prequel, Gets Series Order at HBO

It has been a very busy day for HBO and Warner Bros Discovery. Earlier today they announced via press release that the streaming platform HBO Max would change its name to Max, and revealed a slew of new series that will premiere on Max. According to Deadline, one of those series will be Game of Thrones prequel called Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which will be based on George R.R. Martin’s (Dying of the Light, Dead Man’s Hand) Dunk & Egg novellas set many years before the events of Game of Thrones.

According to Deadline, the series will be written and executive produced by Martin and Ira Parker (Better Things, The Last Ship). Vince Gerardis (Dark Winds, Flashforward) will also executive produce alongside Ryan Condal (Colony, the Sixth Gun), best known as the showrunner, co-creator, and executive producer for House of the Dragon.

The official logline for Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight reads: “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

The prequel series was one of the several ideas set to follow the success of House of the Dragon. Dunk & Egg, as is best known among fans, has gone through multiple writers but emerged as a frontrunner over the last few months.

After the success of Game of Thrones, HBO has been looking for ways to expand the world of Westeros through more series. At the moment, the only spinoff to come out has been House of the Dragon which proved to HBO that the fans still wanted to explore the stories of Westeros, even after the fan backlash the last season of Thrones experienced. Now, apart from Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Martin has been busy commenting on the progress of the Jon Snow spinoff, the only series that will not be based on any material written by Martin.

There have also been rumors that HBO is also developing a series based on Aegon the Conqueror. While this series is still in its early stages, fans have shown excitement over the rumors, proving to HBO that fans of Thrones are eager to learn more about the past of Westeros and House Targaryen.

Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is still in pre-production and no release date has been given, but it will premiere on Max. All seasons of Game of Thrones are available on HBO Max. House of the Dragon, which just started production on its second season, is also available to stream on HBO Max.
