Kathy Bates Says She Will Retire After The ‘Matlock’ Series

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar winner Kathy Bates (Dolores Claiborne) has announced that the upcoming Matlock series will be her last role. The actress is ready to retire, as she announced in an interview with The New York Times on Sunday. She stated that after a movie shoot, she cried at home on her sofa before contacting her agent and telling them she wanted to retire.

Bates, now 76, spoke about acting and work in the interview: “It becomes my life. Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent. Because I can’t hold it back, and I just want my life.”

As per The Hollywood Reporter, weeks after the shoot, her agent sent her the script for the reboot of Marlock. The original series aired from 1986 to 1995 and starred Andy Griffith (The Andy Griffith Show) as Benjamin Matlock (Great Balls of Fire!). The reboot will follow Bates’ character, Madeline Matlock, who rejoins the law workforce as a senior and is racking up courtroom wins. This story intrigued Bates, who had Rolling Stone, noting “the idea of playing a woman out to right wrongs.”

Below is the trailer for season one of the series.

Bates continued via The Hollywood Reporter, “Everything I’ve prayed for, worked for, clawed my way up for, I am suddenly able to be asked to use all of it,” she said. “And it’s exhausting.”

Bates revealed,  “This is my last dance,” when talking about the series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, with over 50 years of experience, the actress has said of stardom, “I never really thought about being a movie star. I just wanted to be the best I could be.”

Looking back at her career, Bates said, “I never felt dressed right or well. I felt like a misfit. It’s that line in Misery when Annie says, ‘I’m not a movie star.’ I’m not.”
Bates is known for many series such as Harry’s Law, American Horror Story, The Big Bang Theory, Disjointed and many more.

Matlock premieres on CBS on September 22 and will also be available to stream on Paramount+.
