Julie Bowen Cast in Peacock’s ‘Hysteria!’

According to Deadline, Peacock has signed with two-time Emmy winning actress Julie Bowen for its upcoming series Hysteria! Bowen is best known for her role as Claire Dunphy in ABC’s hit sitcom Modern Family, as well as Virginia Venit in comedy film Happy Gilmore.

The show is still in its early stages, with little information surrounding it. The premise, via Variety, is a “coming-of-age thriller that explores American’s dark history of mass hysteria through the shocking story of the teenage Satanic Panic, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts in the ’80s. As a group, they realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported ‘supernatural activity’ triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.”

Bowen will portray the mother of one of the teenage outcasts. Her character, Linda Campbell, “experiences a series of supernatural disturbances that force her to question everything she knows about her son, as well as the growing threat of Satanism in their small Midwestern town,” according to Variety.

David A. Goodman is reportedly the showrunner, writer, and executive producer of the series. Goodman has been nominated for six Emmy awards for producing comedies Family Guy and Futurama. Some of his recent contributions are The Orville and Bless the Harts. Matthew Scott Kane also serves as the writer and executive producer of the series. He has worked on several projects in the horror genre, such as Annabelle Comes Home and a few episodes of American Horror Story. Alongside Kane, the list of executive producers are John Francis Daley (Bones, Spider-Man: Homecoming), Jonathan Goldstein (Horrible Bosses, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Chris Bender (Senior Year, Mulan), and Jake Weiner (Criminal, A History of Violence).
