Leading up to the August 6 finale of Jon Stewart’s run on The Daily Show, speculation over who would grace Jon’s guest chair for the final time has run the gamut from Barack Obama to Bill O’Reilly, and just about everyone in between. However, Mr. Stewart himself has finally put the big question to rest, and has revealed that a lineup of comedians – including Amy Schumer, Denis Leary, and Louis C.K. – will be among The Daily Show with Jon Stewart‘s final guests later this week.
The denouement of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart has been a long time coming. Stewart announced in February his plans to abdicate the Comedy Central throne, and soon after, confirmed South African comedian Trevor Noah as his replacement host as of the next season, starting September 28, 2015. Due to Stewart’s magnificent popularity, the orchestration of his final few shows, as well as the logistics of handing his legacy over to Noah, has put him in the spotlight in the weeks leading up to August 6.
The Daily Show premiered in 1996 and was hosted by Craig Kilborn until 1999, when he handed it over to Stewart, who turned it into one of the most-lauded nightly talk shows of all time. The Daily Show touts itself as a “fake news” show, condensing daily world events and politics into a witty, hilarious half-hour presentation. The show usually features several different news segments, broken down by Stewart into satirical analysis and jokes. Each show ends with an interview with a celebrity guest – Stewart has had actors, writers, artists, activists, politicians – even Presidents.
Schumer, Leary, and Louis C.K. are solid choices of guests to send off a show steeped in humor and wit. Schumer will be Monday’s guest, Leary will be Tuesday’s, and C.K. will be Wednesday’s. As for Jon’s ultimate final guest – we’re going to have to wait until Thursday night to solve that mystery.
Once again, Jon Stewart has done The Daily Show justice – we will be devastated to see him go, but hopefully, some of our tears will be of laughter.
