Today, Netflix finally confirmed what Marvel fans were anxiously waiting to hear: The Punisher and Jessica Jones have been canceled. With other Marvel shows such as Daredevil, Iron Fist and Luke Cage being canceled on the streaming site in the past few months, this news doesn’t come to us in surprise.
“Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix,” Netflix confirmed today to Deadline. “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come,” the streamer added.
“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” Netflix also made official. “We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others”.
“We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”
The Punisher’s Jon Bernthal took to Instagram to post an emotional farewell after the news broke out.
Although we are grateful to Netflix for allowing the third season of Jessica Jones to be made available sometime soon this year, it doesn’t make us feel better knowing that it’s the last one. Krysten Ritter thanked everyone involved with her show and, of course, her fans.
Don’t expect to see the characters in the MCU until 2010/2021. When Marvel TV and Netflix struck a deal years ago, Marvel was told they could not use the characters two years after cancellation.
With the Disney+ streaming site coming out soon later this year, we can see some of our favorite MCU superheroes like Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and the villain Loki in their own TV shows. As of now, we don’t know if Marvel TV will ever join Disney+.
