Jon Bernthal To Get ‘The Punisher’ Spinoff On Netflix

“Locked and loaded.”

Fans are finally able to put the rumors to rest, as Netflix announced on Twitter early Friday that Marvel’s The Punisher is back!

That’s right, the vigilante from Daredevil is getting his own show on Netflix.

Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) is set to reprise his role in this comic inspired adaption from  Netflix and Marvel. Bernthal previously played Frank Castle, the war vet turned vigilante, in the most recent season of Daredevil and apparently did such a great job they asked him back.

No complaints here.

Stepping into multiple roles, Variety reports that, “Hannibal’s executive producer Steve Lightfoot will be serving as showrunner, writer and executive producer [for the show].”

The Punisher will be the sixth Marvel comic series to work with Netflix. Daredevil was the first collaboration and Jessica Jones followed shortly after. Marvel and Netflix are set to premiere Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, Finn Jones’ Iron Fist and The Defenders which would include multiple Marvel comic universe characters.

There is no official word yet as to who exactly will be participating in The Defenders; or whether or not Frank Castle would be included in the show as well.

After Bernthal’s Daredevil finished casting, rumors began to circulate last summer that The Punisher spinoff was in the near future for Netflix. TVLine was the first news outlet to report on the possibility of a spinoff back in 2015.

Comics have always had a strong sense of popularity among avid readers but the popularity the comic universe has seen with the collaborations between page and film has increased the popularity even more. These collaborations enable fans to see more visually their heroes and villains brought to life.

The Walking Dead fans can attest to this in regards to Bernthal. He played the villain we all loved to hate back in the early seasons of the zombie show and was able to bring comic book Shane to life like no other actor may have been able to.

With Netflix now diving so deep into the comic universe, it begs to question what other comics they’ll try to make and what other actors they may get to fill the roles.
