Following the success of his Everybody’s in LA comedy event, John Mulaney is partnering with Netflix to launch weekly live talk series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Barajaria announced the project’s pickup during today’s Bloomberg Screentime conference. According to Bajaria, the series is set for a 2025 premiere.
As previously reported by mxdwn, Mulaney hosted six-day live event earlier this summer during the Netflix Is A Joke Fest. The live event saw Mualney host a combo of traditional comedy, variety, and talk series that live-streamed each day during the annual festival. The event premiered on May 3 with each episode premiering nightly at 7 p.m. through May 10. Mulaney also performed live at the Hollywood Bowl on May 4th as part of the festival.
The event series featured Mulaney in a new light compared to his past comedy specials, appearances on Saturday Night Live, and own television spots; he was featured in the “Fishes” episode of The Bear last year. The event also touted Netflix’s dominance in the standup comedy space, occurring during one of the country’s biggest comedy special events. The Netflix Is A Joke event is a 10-day comedic smorgasbord of approximately 300 shows across 35 venues throughout Los Angeles. Not only is the festival an oasis for new talent to hone their skills, but it attracts some of the biggest names in comedy. This year’s festival lineup included former late-night giant David Letterman (Our Next Guest Needs No Introduction, The Late Show With David Letterman), Jerry Seinfeld (Bee Movie, Seinfeld), Chris Rock (Head of State, Fargo), Beef‘s Ali Wong, and Sarah Silverman (Wreck-It-Ralph, School of Rock) to name a few.
In addition to this series boasting Netflix’s comedy chops, it’s another opportunity for the streaming platform to entrench the live-TV model. Netflix has eagerly strategized ways to secure more live-event offerings, from last year’s live-streamed comedy special to their deal to stream WWE’s Monday Night Raw.
