Newsroom alum Joel Johnstone has joined ABC’s new drama Astronaut Wives Club, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Johnstone will play Gus Grissom, described as “an average student and athlete, he may be the least likely astronaut, yet he proves himself to be one of NASA’s top men and an extraordinary engineer who flies the Mercury and Gemini missions– and becomes the first man to go into space twice.”
The new 1960s-set drama tells the real-life stories of the women who stood beside their husbands, considered some of the biggest heroes in American history during the height of the space race.
Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl) has penned the script based off of Lily Koppel’s best-selling novel. Nick Cassavetes will direct the freshman season of the series, which has been rescheduled from its original summer premiere to midseason.
Johnstone is repped by BRS Gage, McKuin Frankel and Working Entertainment. Other credits include HBO’s Getting On and Lifetime’s Deliverance Creek.
