Jesse Lee Soffer Previews Season Four of ‘Chicago P.D.’

When viewers last saw the Chicago P.D. gang, Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) was talking to the people who killed his son, Justin, and Detective Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) was driving away as she heard gunshots after she tried to talk him out of killing them.

In the newest promo for the show, it looks as if other members of the police department are determined to find out what happened after the events of the finale. Jesse Lee Soffer, who plays Detective Jay Halstead on the show, talked with The Hollywood Reporter about what viewers can expect during the upcoming season of the show.

Soffer said the season premiere picks up a few weeks after the murder of Voight’s son and that there aren’t any new leads about what happened. “Did Voight kill him? Did he not? We don’t know. So the rest of the unit is trying to pick up the pieces and keep their necks above water,” Soffer said.

Soffer continued by saying that the first few episodes are rough for the team, especially to Erin, since Voight played a huge part in her life and still does play a huge part in her life.

And when it comes to Soffer’s character and Bush’s character, he said fans are going to a lot happier with the more screen time the two of them are getting for their personal relationship. “I think Lindsay and Halstead are going to be a little more solid for a bit. They’re going to enjoy being together without Voight breathing down their necks and we’re going to settle down a little and see what that looks like.”

As for Halstead and Voight’s relationship? Soffer said that he thinks his character is more confident in being able to disagree with how Voight handles certain cases, especially since Voight tends to be a little more prone to using violence as the answer instead of doing things by the book.

Soffer also previewed the potential for a large-scale crossover between all the Chicago shows once Chicago Justice premieres in the midseason, meaning the writers and producers would be dealing with a story large enough to affect both Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Chicago Med and Chicago Justice. Soffer added that it would be fun to get Law and Order: Special Victims Unit in on the crossover, meaning that Soffer wants all five of Dick Wolf’s shows to be involved in multiple crossover episodes.

Speaking of Chicago Justice, Soffer said that viewers of Chicago P.D. will get to see the Cook County States Attorney and Assistant States Attorneys before Chicago Justice premieres so that way viewers will get to know about them before the newest show in the Chicago franchise.

Chicago P.D. returns for its fourth season on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10 p.m.
