Jean Smart To Star In New Limited Series Based On New York Times Article ‘Love Letter: When My Grandmother Stopped Eating’

Jean Smart (Hacks, The Accountant) is set to star and executive produce a new prospective limited series. Derived from a New York Times article by Kevin Hershey entitled Love Letter: When My Grandmother Stopped Eating,” Deadline reports the Emmy-award-winning actress is working on a series that revolves around the relationship between a grandmother and grandson as they navigate the last few months of her life.

This series comes from Smart herself with Angeliki Giannakopoulos (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, My Child: Mothers of War), Smart’s producing partner, and their company, SmartAngel Entertainment. Clark Peterson (Monster, Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet) and Dennis Erdman (Sex and the City, We Need Girlfriends) obtained Hershey’s life rights and are set to executive produce the project beside Giannakopoulos and Smart.

The series will follow a grandmother who, towards the end of her life, is reluctantly cared for by her 20-something gay grandson. The grandson then moves into his grandmother’s Catholic senior living facility, which is home to both hippie and more traditional nuns. According to Deadline, Smart has been cast to play the role of the grandmother in this touching and humorous story.

Deadline also notes that Smart and her team are seeking writers to bring the script to life.

Smart has won an impressive five Emmy awards, not to mention consecutive wins for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work portraying Deborah Vance in Hacks for Max. As previously reported, Hacks is set to debut its anticipated third season this spring.

As per Deadline, other work credits for Smart include the drama movie Wildflower with Dash Mihok (Ray Donovan, The Thin Red Line), Kiernan Shipka (Carriers, Totally Killer) and Alexandra Daddario (Baywatch, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters). She was also seen in Babylon by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, 10 Cloverfield Lane)

Smart is represented by Untitled Entertainment and WME.
