HBO Max has reportedly cast Jay Lycurgo (Marcus, I may Destroy You) as Tim Drake for its upcoming third season of Titans, according to Variety. Tim Drake is known to most comic fans as the third Robin and has penchant for detective work. Lycurgo is set to appear in Matt Reeves (Director, Dawn of The Planet of The Apes) The Batman film which will premiere in 2022, but there’s no way of knowing yet if he will be playing Tim Drake. “Lycurgo is next set to appear in a supporting role in Matt Reeves’ upcoming feature “The Batman,” though if he will be playing Drake in the film as well remains unclear,” according to Variety.
Lycurgo has appeared in major television shows like HBO Max’s I May Destroy You and an Amazon short titled Father of The Bride, he has established himself as an experienced actor when it comes to dramatic roles and his experience will aid him in portraying Tim Drake. Most of the drama in Titans is packed with references to the characters origin stories so it will be interesting to see how Titans portrays Tim’s origin and what they highlight during his time training with Bruce (Ian Glen, Game of Thrones).
While other characters have stepped into the role of Robin, none are quite as famous as the first three, Damien Wayne being the outlier. Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake all had unique introductions into Batman’s life. These three Robins have natural and practiced abilities that they use to help The Dark Knight in his war against crime. Grayson is the acrobat, using the skills he picked up from working in Haly’s Circus to amplify his martial arts capabilities and evasive maneuvers. Todd was rebellious fighter with an indominable spirit, he questioned Batman’s code of morality for criminals until the point of his death. After Todd’s revival he returns to Gotham to challenge Batman with his new identity as Red Hood.
Fans were introduced to Drake in 1989, he was created by Marv Wolfman and Pat Broderick. Using his detective skills, he was one of the few who uncovered Batman’s secret identity on their own. Drake is known to be street smart and quick on his feet, while all sidekicks trained by Batman are proficient in combat and survival techniques, Tim’s best asset is his mind. He often finds clues that his teammates overlook, he formulates hypotheses, and tracks down every lead to find the truth. To the core Tim is a formidable force on Batman’s team and fans can look forward to seeing him in action when Titans season three launches.
