According to an article by Deadline, many fans of the Peacemaker series are wondering if the eponymous mercenary, played by John Cena (The Suicide Squad, Bumblebee), will get his own feature film. Luckily for fans, Comicbook.com asked the co-head of DC Studios, James Gunn (Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy), the same question following successful ratings of the second season of the HBO series.
“I actually know the answer to that question,” he said to Comicbook.com via Deadline. “And I am not at liberty to say under penalty of the Safran punishment, which is a loss of my knuckle. Every time I give away something, Peter Safran will take away another joint of my finger. It’s very painful. He uses a cigar cutter.”
True to his answer, Gunn has admittedly been rather quiet about what will be included in the canon of the new DC Universe that he’s working on with his DC Studios co-head Peter Safran (Superman, The Suicide Squad). In the revamp, Cena’s portrayal of Peacemaker made it to the new universe, and according to Deadline, Gunn also gave an answer as to whether or not Margot Robbie‘s (The Suicide Squad, Barbie) Harley Quinn will also survive the revamp.
“That will be revealed down the line,” he said to Entertainment Weekly via Deadline.
Deadline also writes that Gunn is also trying to bring the character Bloodsport, portrayed by Idris Elba (The Suicide Squad, Thor), to the new DC Universe.
“I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out,” Gunn also told Entertainment Weekly via Deadline. “So we’ll see what happens.”
John Cena first played Christopher Smith, known as Peacemaker, in Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad, later reprising his role in HBO’s Peacemaker. Recently, Cena also briefly appeared in Gunn’s 2025 film Superman in July. The second season of Peacemaker will premiere for audiences on August 21.
