It’s especially sunny in Philadelphia.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is on the cusp of making history. Not only is it the only comedy that has had its characters commit incest and eat a puppy, but it will now be tied as the longest running live- action sitcom. FXX has renewed the cult- favorite for season 13 and 14, according to The Hollywood Reporter. And no, this isn’t a sick April Fool’s Day joke. Sunny just finished its 11th season (the show got a similar multi- season pick up in 2014 that included season 12) but that didn’t stop the network from assuring its fate through 2019.
Hitting the fourteenth season mark will tie the record set by The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, a decidedly more wholesome sitcom that ran from 1952- 1966. It starred the real- life musical Nelson family. Meanwhile, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is about a group of bar tenders/ frequenters Mac (series creator McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson) and Frank (Danny DeVito) who regularly get into horrific situations beyond imagination, many of which have inspired an entire mythology among fans (Frank’s gun, Dee the bird, Dayman). Also it’s set in Philadelphia.
While Olson has booked a pilot Mick with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia writers John and Dave Chernin, she is still expected to be on the show.
The years haven’t slowed the degenerates of Paddy’s Pub at all. It’s the top- rated cable comedy for the desired 18- 49 year- old demographic. In fact, since its move to the new comedy- focused FXX from FX back in 2013, the show’s ratings among these (relatively) young viewers has increased. That same year the show hit another milestone with its 100th episode. The episode celebrated each character’s specific brand of insanity by showing how each imagines themselves saving the day when they witness a robbery at the convenience store.
FXX’s current lineup includes the inventive Jay Baruchel starring Man Seeking Woman and the best anti- romantic comedy out there You’re the Worst, both well- padded by every single episode of The Simpsons ever.
Praise be to the Day Man, the champion of the sun!
