Comic book adaptation Invincible‘s fourth season will be introducing brand new storyline not originally in the comic books, co-creator Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Firepower) confirmed in an interview with Collider. The development marks a departure from the series’ previous three seasons that more closely followed the comic books.

Kirkman’s remarks came amidst the New York Comic Con 2025 weekend, when he stated that fans will get to see the new story in the new season’s fourth episode, according to Collider.

Per Collider: “I wrote the fourth episode. I can say that. I shouldn’t have said that. I should have said what it was. It was a very special episode to me because it represents a new story that isn’t from the comics, and so I wanted to tackle that,” said Kirkman, who co-created created the series along with artists Cory Walker (Spider-Man Unlimited, Marvel Team-Up) and Ryan Ottley (The Amazing Spider-ManHulk).

This comes after a post-credits scene in season three’s finale revealed that the show would be reintroducing Damien Darkblood (Clancy Brown), who disappeared after season one. Darkblood has also strung along another demon character, voiced by Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead, Army of Darkness).

“Bruce was absolutely awesome. Huge part of that episode. He’s an icon in the industry, and I’ve known him for a while, and was really excited that he was able to come in and do that voice,” Kirkman said of Campbell. He added in the Collider interview that the new story will mark a “big sidestep” from how the show has been previously presented.

Kirkman also heaped praise on the series’ showrunner and crew for integrating the new story into the rest of the season.

“Then the whole season was so complicated that I was really just working with Simon Racioppa to make sure all the beats land and everything. But we have a great writing staff that handled the specific stuff,” said Kirkman via Collider.

Making its debut in 2003, Invincible follows the story of superhero Mark Grayson, the son of Earth’s most powerful superhero Omni-Man. The comic ran 144 issues and came to a close in 2018. The animated series came to Prime Video in 2021, and was renewed for a second and third season after a successful run. The streamer has recently greenlit the series for a fifth season.

The show’s heavy-hitting cast includes Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy) and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, La la Land), who voice Mark’s mother and father, respectively, while Mark is voiced by Steven Yeun (Nope, Minari).

Supporting cast members include Grey DeLisle (The Simpsons, King of the Hill), Gillian Jacobs (Community, Choke), Walton Goggins (Fallout, The Hateful Eight), Chris Diamantopoulos (The Sticky, The Boys in the Boat), and Jason Mantzoukas (The Dictator, They Came Together).

Invincible season four is slated to release in March 2026 on Prime Video.
