After the CW passed on picking up the Insatiable pilot and producing it into a full season, many believed that they had heard the last of any news regarding the show. Those that were excited for the potential hour long beauty pageant drama series have a reason to celebrate now, though, because Netflix has decided to pick the series up for a 13-episode first season. Deadline exclusively broke the news that the streaming service is currently in the process of finalizing a deal with CBS TV Studios for the series.
Following the CW’s decision to not pick up the pilot for a full season, Deadline reported that many networks and streaming services were interested in picking up the series. Debby Ryan, star on the upcoming series, took to Twitter to confirm the news. She tweeted, “Stoked to announce that Insatiable is the new bb member of the @netflix family. The pathological strange funny baby,” along with a link to the original Deadline article.
Insatiable was inspired by Bill Alverson, an established Southern lawyer turned beauty pageant coach. The series will follow the story of Bob, played by The Good Wife‘s Dallas Roberts, as a dishonored and unhappy lawyer turned beauty pageant coach. Bob takes on Patty, played by The Suite Life on Deck‘s Ryan, as a bullied and bitter client. Their business agreement ultimately becomes more than Bob originally bargained on and presumably drama ensues. The series will also star Ugly Betty‘s Christopher Gorham, Awkward‘s Erinn Westbrook, Six‘s Michael Provost, Chelsea Lately‘s Sarah Colonna, Big Little Lies‘s Kimmy Shields, and Just Go With It‘s Irene Choi. Charmed‘s Alyssa Milano will appear in a recurring role.
The series was created by Once Upon A Time‘s Lauren Gussis. Ryan Seacrest Productions and Storied Media Group are also involved with the series. Gussis wrote the pilot and Andrew Fleming directed it. Gussis and Ryan Seacrest will serve as executive producers.
Insatiable was reported to be well received by the CW, but the darkly comedic series was ultimately turned down because executives believed that it did not fit in with the network’s brand. Due to the CW renewing 11 series from the 2016-2017 season, the executives had to be very selective regarding which show’s would make it on television. The network settled on picking up Dynasty, Life Sentence, Valor, and Black Lightning to fill the time slots for the 2017-2018 season.
