Iggy Pop Executive Produces ‘Punk’ Docuseries for Epix

Iggy Pop from The Stooges is teaming up with John Varvatos, a rock fashion designer, to create an Epix docuseries called Punk. According to Epix, “Featuring original interviews with America’s punk pioneers and the U.K.’s most notorious bands, alongside a seamless blend of rare and unseen photos, gritty archival film and video, a crackling soundtrack of punk hits and misses, Punk explores the music, the fashion, the art and the DIY attitude of a subculture of self-described misfits and outcasts.”

Epix, owned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, is also working on another docuseries that will air on February 4, 2019. According to Deadline, Elvis Goes There will be about Elvis Mitchell, a veteran journalist who gives a behind-the-scenes look into film legends like Guillermo del Toro and Sofia Coppola. However, Punk seems to be more involved, with music fans hoping for a longer series than the mere four episodes slated for Elvis Goes There.

The lineup for the series is already an all-star cast with interviews from punk rock legends: Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols, Marky Ramone from The Ramones, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Grohl from Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, Duff McKagan from Guns N’ Roses, and Jello Biafra from the Dead Kennedys. There will also be interviews with other industry professionals such as Danny Fields (Elektra Records), Legs McNeil (Please Kill Me/Punk Magazine), and filmmaker Penelope Spheeris (The Decline of Western Civilization, Wayne’s World) just to name a few. The series will also include archival photos and footage as well as the art, fashion, and music of the punk scene.

“Exploring and reliving the history of punk has been an absolute labor of love for me,” Varvatos admitted in an interview Monday. “Punk’s ability to transcend generations in its culture, music and style is a story that needs to be told. So…Hey Ho Let’s Go!!”

Known as the “Godfather of Punk,” Iggy Pop has also acted in films like Blood Orange and voice acted in various shows, but this will be his first role as producer. For those who grew up during these times or who were at all involved in the punk scene, this series is sure to be a must-see.

Punk is set to air March 11, 2019 at 10:00 PM ET on Epix. This story first broke on Deadline.
