Hulu’s ‘The Girl From Plainville’ Series Taps Lisa Cholodenko To Direct Elle Fanning

Lisa Cholodenko (Unbelievable, Olive Kitteridge) will direct the first two episodes of Hulu’s The Girl from Plainville drama series starring Elle Fanning (The Great), according to Deadline. Production will begin later this year for the show, which is based on the real-life Michelle Carter texting-suicide case as detailed in HBO’s 2019 documentary, I Love You, Now Die.

The Girl from Plainville pulls its inspiration from Jesse Barron’s true-crime article in Esquire, according to Deadline. The story revolves around Carter, played by Fanning, who was accused of assisting in the suicide of her boyfriend Conrad Roy through a series of calls and texts exchanged when they were teenagers.

Cholodenko won an Outstanding Directing Emmy for her work on the HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge. She wrote and directed the feature film, The Kids Are All Right, which was nominated for four Academy Awards and won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy. Her additional TV directing credits include Hung, The L Word and Six Feet Under.

Deadline reports that The Girl from Plainville will be helmed by writer Liz Hannah (The Post) and executive producer Patrick MacManus (Dr. Death), both serving as co-showrunners. Fanning and Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward (The Great) are also executive producers. It is produced by UCP, with Barron and the director of I Love You, Now Die, Erin Lee Carr, joining as consulting producers.

Hulu greenlit the show with a straight-to-series order last August, according to Deadline.
