Hulu has announced that the streaming service will be developing a new adult animated comedy. According to Deadline, the new series in development is titled Bad Friends and comes from a podcast of the same title. The new series is written by podcast creators Andrew Santino (This is Us, Ricky Stanicky) and Bobby Lee (TigerBelly, Mad TV) and is created by the two alongside Nick Kreiss (Little Bitches) and Andres Salaf (How to Get Over a Breakup).
The new series Bad Friends follows the friendship between two bugs Andrew, a lightning big, and Bobby, a rolly polly. The show will follow the two as their opposing personalities take them through the ups and downs of being outcast bugs in their years in high school.
The podcast that the show hails from is not exactly like the show, as it doesn’t feature two misfit bugs, but it does include plenty of comedy and friendship. Streaming weekly on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music, the podcast features Santino and Lee flexing their improv skills as they talk about pop culture, entertainment, and friendship and bring on guests on a weekly basis. The podcast was officially launched in 2020 and has become one of the top-performing comedy podcasts across several streaming platforms.
With the massive success of the current animated shows such as Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers, Hulu has been recently scouting for more adult animated content as the field has been getting more and more competitive. The streamer recently has revived the series Solar Opposites and Futurama, but there has been a call for some new blood in the animation game. Alongside Bad Friends, the streamer has also ordered an animated series titled Journey to the Center of the Internet.
There is yet to be any word on development of the series, as it has just been ordered by Hulu.
