Hulu Cancels Comedy Series ‘The Other Black Girl’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hulu has just canceled the comedy series The Other Black Girl. The streamer announced the cancellation of the series based on Zakiya Dalila Harris’s (A Word on Words) novel earlier today.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series first went into development in 2020 and eventually aired its first season in 2023. It premiered with a total of ten episodes and was met with very impressive reviews. Currently, the series has an 86% rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes with audience reviews being 50% among viewers. 

The Other Black Girl is a comedy series that follows Nella, a promising editor’s assistant at the fictional Wagner Books. Nella’s life seems to be on the fast track to success until she meets Hazel, the new assistant who quickly steals the attention of everyone with their style. 

Cast for the series includes Sinclair Daniel (Three Ways Out), Ashleigh Murray (Riverdale), Brittany Adebumola (Grand Army), Hunter Parrish (This is Us), Bellamy Young (Scandal), Eric McCormack (Travelers), and many others. 

Jordan Reddout (Queens) and Gus Hickey (Will & Grace) serve as both showrunners and producers for the series. Executive producers include Onyx’s Duncan, Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation), Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen (First Man) Wyck Godfrey (Dave), Adam Fishbach (Smile), and author Harris.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, during an interview with them last year after the conclusion of the writers’ strike, producers of the series spoke about its future. 

Reddout said, “Our brains are spinning. They’ve been spinning on season two for a year. It’s something we constantly talk about and would be very exciting to do.” 

Hickey added,  “Since we changed the ending, we want the chance to show everyone what’s going to happen now. There’s a lot to explore.”

The first season of The Other Black Girl is still available to stream on Hulu.
