Disney+ will adapt prolific game creator Hideo Kojima’s (Outer Heaven Phantoms, Just A Game) PlayStation title Death Stranding into an animated series, Kojima’s company Kojima Productions announced Thursday.
The creator of the Metal Gear franchise made the announcement at the Disney+ Originals Preview at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, where he stood beside the new series’ director Takayuki Sano, noting that the series will be their first ever partnership with a global streaming platform.
The duo also announced that this installment will be an animated production and will feature an original storyline separate from the content of the games.
With the working title Death Stranding Isolations, the series is set during the adventures of Sam Bridges and will follow a young man and woman in a world devastated by a phenomenon referred to as the Death Stranding. An official synopsis for the series reads: “The someones are also trying to deal with their isolation in their own way. An old man trying to realize salvation through ways outside of the connection advocated by Bridges. A female warrior who tries to kickstart a world of constant fighting. A boy with a grudge against Bridges. A girl who embraces loneliness.”
Death Stranding was released in 2019 on the PlayStation 4 to wide acclaim, scoring an 82 out of 100 on ratings aggregator Metacritic and spawning a 2025 sequel titled Death Stranding 2: On the Beach for the PlayStation 5. The games follow Sam Porter Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead, The Bikeriders), a courier who attempts to slowly stitch society back together by delivering supplies to the disparate colonies that contain Earth’s remaining survivors while connecting them to a wireless communication network. However, along the way Bridges is pursued by a genocidal militant group bent on destroying the rest of humanity.
Alongside Reedus, the original title features Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, The Hunt), Léa Seydoux (No Time to Die, Midnight in Paris), Margaret Qualley (The Substance, Kinds of Kindness), Troy Baker (The Last of Us, The Simpsons), Tommie Earl Jenkins (Wednesday, The Rainmaker), and Lindsay Wagner (Grey’s Anatomy, The Paper Chase).
Two films are currently in development based on the franchise, with one being produced by A24 in association with Alex Lebovici’s (Don’t Move, Barbarian) Hammerstone Studios, alongside Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) and Lars Knudsen (The Witch, American Honey), with Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One) set to direct. That film is slated for a 2027 release. The other project, an anime tentatively titled Death Stranding Mosquito, is currently being developed by Line Mileage, with ABC Animation’s Hiroshi Miyamoto attched as director and an original story written by Aaron Guzikowski (Rasied by Wolves, Prisoners). A teaser trailer was released in September.
Concept art for the new series, which will be told through 2D, hand-drawn animation, was develoepd by Ilya Kuvshinov (One Piece, Maboroshi), who served as character designer for Netflix’s two-season Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 animated series.
Neither Disney+ nor Kojima have yet announced a release schedule or cast information for Isolations.
