HBO’s ‘The Leftovers’ Moves to Australia for its Final Season

The Garveys are packing up once again.

HBO’s criminally under-viewed critical darling The Leftovers will be moving to Australia, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This is not the first change of scenery for the series, which has switched up locations both on- and off-screen for each of its first two seasons. Season 1 of the Damon Lindelof (Lost, Star Trek Into Darkness, World War Z) and Tom Perotta (Little Children, Election) show took place in the fictional New York town of Mapleton, and Season 2 mainly took place in the fictional miracle town of Jardin, Texas.

The decision to move production to Australia, as well as with the previous location changes, has to do with a key story arc in the series related to Kevin Garvey’s (Justin Theroux) father. Considering the ‘miracles’ and salvation that the Garveys found waiting for them when they moved to Jardin in season 2 looking for some sort of hope, one can only imagine what insanity and existential crises they will encounter in Australia.

The Leftovers, based on Perotta’s book of the same name, takes place in a world where two percent of the population has mysteriously disappeared, although in season 2 it is revealed that not a single person disappeared from the small town of Jardin. The series focuses on a group of people as they try to come to terms with these disappearances and struggle through their daily lives.

The HBO drama is a showcase of exemplary writing and a knockout cast that includes Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Amy Brenneman, Liv Tyler, Christopher Eccleston, Ann Dowd, Margaret Qualley and Chris Zylka.

A premiere date for the third and final season of The Leftovers has not been announced as of yet, but hopefully one will be revealed soon considering this new update.
