HBO’s ‘Big Little Lies’ is Returning Sunday for Its Highly Anticipated Second Season

After a two year hiatus, HBO’s Big Little Lies is returning Sunday for its second season. The new season will air June 9th 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT exclusively on HBO. Big Little Lies is based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel by the same name. The last episode of season one aired back in April 2017.

The story centers on the town of  Monterey, California where the “Monterey Five” mothers Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Renata and Bonnie have bonded over tragedy, and a secret that has yet to be revealed. According to the press release by HBO, the new season will uncover “the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode…and the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.”

The new season will consist of seven episodes. HBO revealed some details on the first three episodes of the season in their press release. Episode 1, entitled “What Have They Done?,” airs this Sunday. This episode begins with the first day of school. Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) worries over Bonnie’s (Zoë Kravitz) concerning behavior, as well as Abigail’s (Kathryn Newton) announcement that she is not going to college. Meanwhile, Celeste’s (Nicole Kidman) mother-in-law, Mary Louise (Meryl Streep), shows up and gives her two cents about Madeline.

In episode two, which airs June 16th, Renata (Laura Dern) finds herself in trouble when Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling) gets himself into legal issues. Jane (Shailene Woodley) gets asked out on a “practice” date by Corey (Douglas Smith), and  Ed (Adam Scott) finally asks Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) to reveal her secrets.

Episode three, called “The End of the World,” will air June 23rd. In this episode, Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) will attempt to get close to Jane (Shailene Woodley) and Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) will confront her marital problems in a couples therapy session with Dr. Reisman (Robin Weigert). Celeste (Nicole Kidman) will still battle with mixed emotions regarding the death of her husband.

Season one received 16 Emmy nominations as well as eight wins. Additionally, the first season earned four Golden Globe awards. The series is created by David E. Kelley, with the teleplay by both Kelley and Liane Moriarty. Andrea Arnold will direct and executive produce all seven episodes. The second season of Big Little Lies will be available on all HBO streaming services.
