HBO announced the release date for the highly anticipated second season of the Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon. Per an official Warner Bros. Discovery press release, the series will premiere on HBO and Max on June 16. The date announcement is paired with two dueling trailers, each from the perspective of the opposing factions: Team Black and Team Green. View the trailers below.
Per the press release, the official synopsis reads: “Westeros is on the brink of a bloody civil war with the Green and Black Councils fighting for King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra, respectively. As each side believes theirs to be the rightful seat on the Iron Throne, the Green and Black trailers reflect those two perspectives in separate yet complementary halves of the same story. For global audiences, “All Must Choose” their side of House Targaryen as the realm fractures in season two.”
Main cast returning for the season include Eve Best (Fate: The Winx Saga, Lucky Man), Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel, Ready Player One), Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown), Emma D’Arcy (Mothering Sunday, Truth Seekers), Fabien Frankel (The Serpent, Venice at Dawn), Tom Glynn-Carney (The King, Tolkien), Rhys Ifans (Elementary, The Amazing Spider-Man), Sonoya Mizuno (Crazy Rich Asians, Devs), Steve Toussaint (It’s a Sin, Red, White, and Blue), and Ewan Mitchell (Saltburn, High Life). Additional cast includes Bethany Antonia (Stay Close, Get Even), Jefferson Hall (Skin Walker, Oppenheimer), Harry Collett (Dolittle, Dunkirk), Phoebe Campbell (Home From Home, The Last Dragonslayer), Matthew Needham (Napoelan, Stutterer), and Phia Saban (The Last Kingdom).
New characters for season two include Abubakar Salim (Raised by Wolves, Informer) as Alyn of Hull, Gayle Rankin (Men, Kindred) as Alys Rivers, Freddie Fox (Slow Horses, Black ’47) as Ser Gwayne Hightower, Simon Russell Beale (The Outfit, King Lear) as Ser Simon Strong, Clinton Liberty (Handsome Devil, Red Election) as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna (Code of Silence, Gran Turismo) as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew (1234, Warrior) as Hugh, Tom Bennett (Patrick, Mascots) as Ulf, Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, and Vincent Regan (One Piece, Before We Die) as Ser Rickard Thorne.
The series is based on the works of author George R. R. Martin (Fire & Blood, The Winds of Winter) who serves as co-creator and executive producer along with showrunner, Ryan Condal (Rampage, Colony). Additional executive producers are Sara Hess (House, Orange is the New Black), Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World, Mad Men), Melissa Bernstein (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul), Kevin de la Noy (Blood Diamond, The Dark Knight), Loni Peristere (American Horror Story, Banshee), and Vince Gerardis ((Jumper, Red Mars).
The eight-episode second season of House of the Dragon debuts Sunday, June 16 on HBO/Max at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
