HBO To Renew True Detective For A Fifth Season

According to Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO has officially renewed True Detective for a fifth season. Season four, True Detective: Night Country, recently concluded on Feb. 18th. The deal is apart of Issa López’s (Tigers Are Not Afraid, Bad Girls) new contract with HBO.

According to Warner Bros. Discovery, Francesca Orsi (Perry Mason, Euphoria), Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Film said, “Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie (Foster (The Silence of the Lambs, Taxi Driver) and Kali’s (Reis (Catch the Fair One, Asphalt City) impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”

López who serves as an executive producer, showrunner and writer for the series said: “From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey (Bloys (Less Than Perfect), Francesca (Orsi) and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”

Per the logline: “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without trace. To solve the case, detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice. The season stars Foster, Reis, Finn Bennett (Hope Gap, The Nevers), Fiona Shaw (Killing EveTrue Blood), with Christopher Eccleston (The Leftovers, Doctor Who), Isabella Star LaBlanc (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, Long Slow Exhale), and John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone, Lincoln). Guest stars include Anna Lambe (The Grizzlies, Trickster), Aka Niviâna (Borgen), and Joel D. Montgrand (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Altered Carbon).”

According to Warner Bros. Discovery, True Detective: Night Country accrued 12.7 million cross platform viewers making it the most watched season of True Detective.

The series is executive produced by Mark Ceryak (Aftersun, If Beale Street Could Talk), Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, Medicine for Melancholy), Adele Romansk (Never Rarely Sometimes Always, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt) and Mari Jo Winkler (Stillwater, Premium Rush) for Pastel. Alan Page Arriaga (Shining Girls, Babel), Richard Brown (Outlaw King, Which Brings Me to You), Foster, Cary Joji Fukunaga (No Time to Die, Maniac), Steve Golin (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich), Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, Now You See Me), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club, Interstellar), Chris Mundy (OzarkCriminal Minds) and Nic Pizzolatto (Deadwood: The MovieThe Magnificent Seven) also serve as executive producers. Sam Breckman (Captain Phillips, Oslo), Princess Daazhraii Johnson (Molly of Denali, Superkitties) and Cathy Tagnak Rexford (The Namesake, Land Claims) are also producers.
