HBO’s Euphoria, starring Zendaya (Dune) and Hunter Schafer, will return for its sophomore season on January 9, according to Deadline. The release date was revealed by the show’s star on her Instagram, in which she also released a teaser showing Rue reverting back to old habits.
Euphoria follows Zendaya’s Rue Bennett, a drug addict fresh out of rehab who struggles with sobriety and her potential future. When she meets Jules Vaughn, played by Schafer, Rue’s perspective on life changes and she makes newfound attempts to maintain her sobriety. The debut season’s finale shows Rue and Jules separating, with both characters finding themselves fighting off old habits in two special episodes centering around each of them. The first episode, titled “Trouble Don’t Last Always,” was released in early December of last year and centered around Rue, while the second was released one month later and was titled “F*ck Anyone Who’s Not Sea Blob.” Both episodes develop the two characters as they reflect on the year that passed.
The teaser, released by Zendaya, shows Rue drifting back into her habits prior to meeting Jules. It features the return cast members Sydney Sweeney (The Voyeurs), Barbie Ferreira (Unpregnant), Alexa Demie (Waves), Maud Apatow (The King of Staten Island), and teases the arrival of a new cast members, including singer Dominic Fike. The first-look at the upcoming season shows a restless Rue dancing to Frank Sinatra’s “Call Me Irresponsible,” as she finds herself in the midst of even more drama.
“When you’re younger, everything feels so permanent. But as you get older, you begin to realize nothing is and everyone you love can drift away,” Rue says.
